What is a sentiment-divergence signal?

A sentiment-divergence signal fires when the tone of the news around an asset and the asset’s price action point in opposite directions — for example, strongly positive coverage while the stock falls, or negative coverage while it rises.

How to read the direction

Divergence is inherently a “something doesn’t add up” signal. When price leads sentiment (the stock moves before the news catches up) it can be an early tell; when sentiment leads price, the market may be discounting the story. Strength reflects how wide the gap is.

When news and price disagree

Most of the time news tone and price move together. A divergence — glowing coverage into a falling stock, or grim headlines into a rising one — is unusual enough to flag, because one of the two is likely to give way.

Reading the direction

Divergence does not name a winner on its own; it flags tension worth investigating. Combined with volume, insider, or institutional signals, it helps distinguish a market quietly repricing ahead of the news from a temporary overreaction.

Frequently asked

What causes a sentiment divergence?
Often the market is trading on information the headlines have not caught up to, or is discounting a story the news is still emphasising. The signal flags the gap so you can dig into which side is right.
Is divergence bullish or bearish?
It depends which way the gap runs and which side resolves it. It is best treated as a prompt to investigate, weighted alongside faster directional signals.
