What is a price signal?
A price signal is a scored event that flags a notable price move in an asset — a sharp gain or loss over a short window, measured against the asset’s own recent behaviour.
A strong upward move leans bullish and a sharp drop leans bearish, with strength scaled to the size of the move. Because raw price momentum is noisy and often mean-reverts, price signals are treated as experimental and are best confirmed by volume, news, or filing signals.
What it captures
A price signal marks a move large enough to stand out against the asset’s normal range — a breakout, a breakdown, or a gap. It answers “something just happened to the price here,” and links to the asset so you can see the context.
Why it is experimental
Short-horizon price momentum is one of the noisiest signal types: many sharp moves reverse quickly. QuantConomy labels price signals experimental and weights confluence — a price move that agrees with insider buying or an 8-K is far more meaningful than a move alone.

Frequently asked
- Why is a price signal marked experimental?
- Because short-term price moves frequently mean-revert, standalone price momentum has a weaker predictive track record than filing-based signals. It is most useful as confirmation, not as a lone trigger.
- How is strength set?
- By the size of the move relative to the asset’s recent range — a larger, faster move against a quiet baseline scores higher than a small wiggle.
