Tether
Tether (USDT) is a stablecoin, a type of cryptocurrency designed to maintain a stable value by being pegged to the US dollar. Launched in 2014 by Tether Limited, a company owned by iFinex, which also operates the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange, USDT aims to provide a low-volatility digital asset that mirrors the value of the US dollar. Each USDT token is theoretically backed by an equivalent amount of US dollars or other assets held in Tether's reserves, which include cash, cash equivalents, U.S. Treasuries, and other financial instruments. This stablecoin is widely used for transferring funds between cryptocurrency markets, providing liquidity on exchanges, and as a safe haven from the volatility of other cryptocurrencies. Despite its stability, Tether has faced controversies regarding the transparency and composition of its reserves, but it remains one of the most widely traded and largest stablecoins by market capitalization.
