The Euro (EUR) is the official currency of 20 European Union countries, collectively known as the eurozone. It was introduced in 1999 as an accounting currency and became the day-to-day operating currency in 2002, replacing the European Currency Unit (ECU) at a 1:1 ratio. The Euro is managed by the European Central Bank (ECB) and is divided into 100 euro cents. It is one of the most widely held and traded currencies globally, second only to the U.S. dollar, and serves as a symbol of European unity and stability.
